چکیده

Since Hippocrates, the human sense of touch has been the most prevalent and successful medical diagnostic technique. A great variety of diseases were diagnosed through tactile sensing including detection of malignant tumors. Hippocrates in 400 B.C. wrote as follows: “... Such swellings as are soft, free from pain, and yield to the finger, ... and are less dangerous than the others. ... then, as are painful, hard, and large, indicate danger of speedy death; but such as are soft, free of pain, and yield when pressed with the finger, are more chronic than these...” [28]. In ancient medicine, medical practitioners have used diagnostic methods based on assessment of mechanical properties of tissues for diagnosing and treating ailments without much help from other tests. During the last century, traditional physical examination techniques were becoming outmoded and were often considered of little clinical value in comparison with many other modern diagnostic technologies. Palpation is only briefly addressed in medical school, and few physicians have the tactile ability to detect subtle variations of tissue elasticity. Few physicians are willing to devote the necessary time to master the technique, despite the fact that the American Cancer Society guidelines suggest for women that clinical breast examination (CBE) be part of a periodic health examination [1] and the American Urological Association in their 2009 Best Practices Statement recommended that men who wish to be screened for prostate cancer should have both a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and a digital rectal examination (DRE) [2]. The development of modern diagnostic technologies has brought a decline in physical examination skills. But is this technique on the way to extinction? During the last two decades, several devices AQ1 CoNtENtS

Investigating Effective Parameters in Tactile Determination of Artery included in Soft Tissue by FEM

One of the newest ways of surgery is known as Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), which in spite of its benefits, because of surgeon's tactile sensing omission, causes some problems with detection of arteries and their exact positions in tissue during a surgery. In this study, tactile detection of an artery in tissue has been modeled by finite element method. In this modeling, three 2D models of ...

Design and Modeling of a New Type of Tactile Sensor Based on the Deformation of an Elastic Membrane

This paper presents the design and modeling of a flexible tactile sensor, capable of detecting the 2D surface texture image, contact-force estimation and stiffness of the sensed object. The sensor is made of polymer materials. It consists of a cylindrical chamber for pneumatic actuation and a membrane with a mesa structure. The inner radius of the cylindrical chamber is 2cm and its outer radius...

Modeling of Tactile Detection of an Artery in a Soft Tissue by Finite Element Analysis

Nowadays, one of the main problems encountered in minimally invasive surgery and telesurgery is the detection of arteries in tissue. In this study, for the first time, tactile detection of an artery in tissue and distinguishing it from the tumor has been modeled by finite element method. In this modeling, three 2D models of tissue have been created: tissue, tissue including a tumor, and tissue ...

Design, Modeling, and Construction of a New Tactile Sensor for Measuring Contact-Force

This paper presents the design, modeling, and testing of a flexible tactile sensor and its applications. This sensor is made of polymer materials and can detect the 2D surface texture image and contact-force estimation. The sensing mechanism is based on the novel contact deflection effect of a membrane. We measure the deflection of the membrane with measuring the strain in the membrane with emb...

Tumor Detection and Morphology Assessment in the Liver Tissue Using an Automatic Tactile Robot

In this paper an automatic examination robot was developed to improve the process of cancer detection, tumor localization and geometrical shape diagnosis. A uniformly distributed compressive load was applied to the top tissue surface and the resultant mechanical stress was measured that was employed for the tumor diagnosis task. The experimental examinations were performed on the soft tissue of...

Design and Construction of a New Capacitive Tactile Sensor for Measuring Normal Tactile Force

This paper presents the design, construction and testing of a new capacitive tactile sensor for measurement of normal tactile force. The operation of proposed sensor has been investigated in ASTABLE and MONOSTABLE circuits. According to the results of these circuits the deviation of ASTABLE circuit results is less than MONOSTABLE circuit results. In addition, the results obtained from ASTABLE c...
